 Cyber-punk:  by Neal Stephenson:

Snow Crash The ultimate cyberpunk Sci-Fi. This epic novel sets the standard by which all future cyberpunk will be compared. Neal Stephenson's mind and the method of expression is beyond compare in this arena. This stories interwoven plots and characters are of grandmaster quality. It take a very possible future sprinkles it with probable techy toys and winds it around a 'Hero' in which all can relate. A must read for hacker and stringer.
 The Diamond Age
I am not going to be long winded or reveal the high points and plot, I just want to say Neal Stephenson did it again, not a sequel to Snow Crash but the same insane vain of wonderful, future world Sci-Fi. The basic tone of the book speaks volume of today socio-political environment and a very possible outcome. The plot and charters wind and copulate like few authors can manage. I enjoyed the way some of the side thoughts and charters were left as a statement unto them selves and not overly exploited or beat to pulp. This book will leave you thinking in a better vein and remembering bits and pieces for a time to come.

Modern:    by Dan Simmons:

Hyperion / The Fall of Hyperion / Endymion / The Rise of Endymion: The best Sci-Fi ever, the whole series. The characters, the plot and the intensity make it a must read not just for Sci-Fi buffs but for any Fiction reader. Dan Simmons has as big of a surprise in the end as did Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. This series touches on all aspects of humanity in seven characters lifetimes through a plethora of worlds.

This Author also appears under Mystery Thriller

 Modern:    by David Brin:

SunDiver / Startide Rising / The Uplift War

Brightness Reef / Infinity's Shore / Heaven's Ranch

This is the type of Sci-Fi we all desire. New technology, new races, new ideas. Perfectly written, it draws you, I was unable to put it down. It only gets better. I was prepared to labor through this second book of this series, it would be hard to come to the mark that SUNDIVER set, Brin surpassed the mark. The array of characters, the depth of interaction, I read it strait through. It is years later with a completely new cast not just dragging out the original story. Another amazing novel in Brin's universe of Uplift.

Other:    by Frederik Pohl:

PLUS:  Man Plus / Mars Plus

ESCHATON: The Other End of Time / The Siege of Eternity / The Far Shore of Time

Part of a true three novel trilogy Eschaton, including . This trio deals with first contact but Pohl couldn't let it be a simple aliens encounter, there are two different and of course warring alien alliances but that is as far as the "of course" goes. The leaders of earth first have to come to terms among themselves so they can choose correctly from slim, hidden and misleading evidences, which group of aliens is truthful and altruistic and which will conquer and enslave. Besides the wonderful Sci-Fi and multitude of sentient beings there is a good study of the human psyche in captivity. Also a twist in dealing with unwanted clones; not knowing which is the original, if there is an original, which clone gets the spouse and like conundrums. You have to stay alert to the fast pace and changing / multiplying cast. A very good read with interesting alien customs and biology's.
